10 policemen injured in Uttar Pradesh mob attack

LUCKNOW - About 10 policemen in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district were Tuesday injured as a mob indulged in heavy brick-batting and arson attack, angered by the death of a school student who was mowed down by a speeding truck in the district, an official said.

Sushil Kumar, 17, a student of Satya Narain Inter College, was run over by a truck Tuesday morning in Chapad village. Agitated over his death, angry locals and the college students fought pitched battles with the police and torched nearly 12-13 vehicles parked outside the Tindwari police station.

Demanding arrest of the erring truck driver, who managed to escape after the accident, the protesters even tried to set afire the Tindwari police station, within whose jurisdiction the accident too place.

“Taking into account the series of violent protests, security has been strengthened in the affected area,” Deputy Inspector General of Police B.P. Tripathi told IANS on telephone from Banda, some 200 km from Lucknow.

According to district administration officials, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) units have been deployed in the village to avert any untoward incident.
