LUCKNOW - As many as 50 women have been booked for assaulting a cop with slippers inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district, police said Sunday.
The women, who are residents of Pratap Nagar area, beat up Senior Sub-Inspector Jagdish Singh inside Jalalabad police station Friday for allegedly misbehaving with the locality’s young women and girls.
A case was registered against 50 women late Saturday.
“We have already initiated an enquiry against Jagdish Singh, who has been accused of misbehaving with the locality women. But we cannot ignore the fact that women took law into their hands and roughed up a policeman,” Superintendent of Police Krishna Mohan told reporters Sunday in Shahjahanpur, some 150 km from Lucknow.
“Stern action would be taken against the policeman if the charges against him are found true,” he said.
Women in Pratap Nagar area alleged that Singh used to misbehave and pass lewd remarks at them while carrying out routine inspection.
Singh apparently had to lock himself in a room when the angry women barged into the police station. However, the women broke open the door and beat him up. Later, the women dragged Singh outside the police station and assaulted him again.
