Japanese rider killed in Moto2 crash in Italy

MISANO ADRIATICO, Italy — Shoya Tomizawa has died after crashing and being hit by two other riders during the Moto2 race at the San Marino Grand Prix.

MotoGP says the 19-year-old Japanese rider lost control of his bike and was hit by the other riders at full speed. Video footage shows Tomizawa hitting his head on the track as his bike flipped over. He was then hit by Alex De Angelis and Scott Redding.

A statement on the MotoGP website said Tomizawa died of cranial, thoracic and abdominal trauma.

ANSA reported that Tomizawa was in a coma when he was flown by helicopter to the hospital.

The races continued after his crash.

Tomizawa’s death comes a week after a 13-year-old rider died after crashing and being hit by another rider in a race before the Indianapolis MotoGP event.
