Arrest in NIreland blast that wounded 3 children
BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Northern Ireland police say they have arrested a suspected Irish Republican Army dissident over a blast that injured three children.
The victims — a 2-year-old and two 12-year-olds — sustained cuts and went into shock when the bomb hidden in a garbage can detonated Aug. 14 in the town of Lurgan, southwest of Belfast. IRA dissidents are particularly active there.
Northern Ireland police say they arrested a 27-year-old man Thursday in the neighboring town of Craigavon on suspicion of involvement in the attack.
Dissidents opposed to the 1997 IRA cease-fire have detonated five car bombs this year outside police stations, a court and the regional headquarters of British spy agency MI5. Those attacks have caused little damage and no serious injuries.
