NY cop accused of not aiding dying girl, suspended
NEW YORK — The New York Police Department says an officer accused of not helping an 11-year-old girl dying of an asthma attack has been suspended without pay.
Brooklyn mother Carmen Ojeda (oh-HAY’-duh) was driving her daughter, Briana (bree-AH’-nuh), to a hospital on Friday when her car crashed. She claims Officer Alfonso Mendez said he didn’t know CPR and couldn’t help the girl, who died soon after.
All officers are trained in CPR at the police academy. Mendez could face departmental charges of failing to act.
A Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association spokesman says the union doesn’t comment on cases like this. A phone number listed under the officer’s name doesn’t accept incoming calls.
Briana’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday.
