Police officer shot, critical

GHAZIABAD - A sub-inspector of the Uttar Pradesh Police was critically wounded when five men opened fire at him and his colleagues in Simbhaoli area here early Wednesday.

Seth Pal was shot in the chest. He is stated to be in serious condition at a hospital in Hapur township.

The officer was conducting a routine check on a highway with constables and head constables around 4 a.m.

When they flagged a Tata 407 van loaded with cattle to stop, the driver sped away, police said.

The policemen chased the vehicle and brought it to a halt. Suddenly, five of its occupants opened fire, Senior Superintendent of Police K.P.S. Chahal said.

Two of the attackers were overpowered while three others escaped, Chahal said. A third man was caught later.

The three were identified as Afzal, Abid and Manavvar. They were ferrying buffaloes to Meerut after stealing them from a house in Bulandshahr. Afzaal and Abid were residents of Hapur while Manavvar lived in Meerut.
