DHAKA - At least 13 people died and many others fell ill after drinking adulterated locally-made liquor in Bangladesh’s Sylhet district, police said Saturday.

Six people died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and the other seven died in their village homes after they had consumed the home-made liquor Thursday night in Golabazar, 265 km northeast of Dhaka, said a police officer.

As many as 17 villagers aged between 28 and 50 took the local liquor and immediately fell sick, said police officer Nirmalendu Chakravarti.

“It is presumed they have taken low quality alcohol since an anti-drug police operation was on over the last few days in the district,” the police officer said.
