CALIFORNIA (GaeaTimes.com) — 8 people were killed when a truck crashed into a crowd of spectators at an off-road race in Southern California’s Mojave Desert. But surprisingly, California Highway Patrol has stated that the driver of that truck will not face any criminal charges.
The race was an amateur series, comprising of 200 miles of track length in the Lucerne Valley area of San Bernardino County.
According to Lopez, a California highway Patrol spokesman, the Californian vehicle code did not apply to the race because permits were issued to the event’s organizers. He said that any safety violations would be investigated by U.S. Bureau of Land Management or by agencies that handle permitted events. Mojave Desert Racing, the organization in charge of the race, was not immediately available for comment. The land management bureau has said that the group was responsible for the safety of everyone at the race.
Beside the death of 8, four more people were taken to the hospital in serious condition. Five others sustained minor to moderate injuries.
The race’s sanctioning body has urged the spectators to stay back 100 feet from the 50-mile course next race onwards. It’s about time that they take such precaution to save innocent lives from such tragedies.
