CHANDIGARH - A Haryana Police officer was suspended Monday after the national flag was unfurled upside down at an Independence Day function at Sirsa town.

“The Haryana Police has placed under suspension, with immediate effect, Assistant Sub-Inspector Vir Bhan (CID Police Lines, Sirsa) and has ordered a departmental inquiry as he has been held guilty in the unfurling of the national flag by the chief guest, with the orange band at the bottom,” a police spokesman said Monday.

Haryana Transport Minister Om Prakash Jain unfurled the national flag at Sirsa town, nearly 300 km from here, Sunday to mark the 64th Independence Day. There were red faces all around when it became evident that the flag had been wrongly wrapped and was thus fluttering upside down.

The spokesman said that Sirsa district police chief Satinder Gupta had informed the district magistrate about the action taken in this regard.
