2 dead in small plane crash in Calif. mountains

EMIGRANT GAP, Calif. — Authorities say two people are dead after a small plane crashed in California near the Sierra Nevada community of Emigrant Gap.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the single engine Piper Cherokee Arrow crashed Friday, but he did not know what time the plane went down.

Gregor says the FAA believes the plane departed from Watsonville and was headed to Auburn, Calif.

Gregor says the two people killed were the only ones on board the plane.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate this accident. Investigators from both agencies are expected to be at the crash site Saturday morning.

Emigrant Gap is about 71 miles northeast of Sacramento.
