UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations is appealing for $459 million to provide immediate help to millions of flood victims in Pakistan.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said “the worst monsoon-related floods in living memory” has affected more than 14 million people and at least six or seven million require immediate humanitarian assistance including food, clean water, shelter and medical care.

It said over 1,200 people have died and at least 288,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed in the flooding.

U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes launched the appeal Wednesday which will cover the immediate relief period of up to 90 days.
