LUCKNOW - Five people were killed and seven critically injured when the vehicle they were travelling in ploughed into a stationary truck in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district early Saturday, police said.

The accident took place in Kotwali Nagar area when a Tata Sumo carrying passengers from Agra to Etah rammed into the truck, killing five people on the spot.

“Five men were killed while seven received critical injuries. They are being treated at a hospital,” police inspector Dal Chand told reporters in Etah, some 350 km from here.

“Preliminary investigations reveal the driver of the Tata Sumo was speeding. He could not control the vehicle and it hit the truck,” he said.

The driver managed to flee from the spot even though he was also hurt, police said.

“Efforts are on to nab the driver,” Chand said.
