JAKARTA, INDONESIA (GaeaTimes.com)- A volcano along the Sumatra island of Indonesia which had been dormant for the past four centuries erupted on Sunday causing thousands of residents to flee their houses. The Mount Sinabung volcano which swung into action for the very first time in 400 years, has been spewing out black smokes resulting in widespread evacuations in the adjoining areas. Indonesian officials have confirmed that as of now there have been no reports of casualties and the aviation in the area has also remained normal.

Surono, who is the head of the country’s vulcanology center has divulged that the Mount Sinabung finally started churning out lava from midnight after it had been rumbling for a number of days. The head of Indonesia’s volcano disaster center also added that given the seriousness of the situation, the warnings have been raised to the highest levels and a red alert has been issued. Moreover, Surono went on to point out that as Mount Sinabung had last erupted way back in 1600 information about its eruptive patterns and general forms is very scarce.

After the eruption of the volcano on the Indonesia island of Sumatra, an estimated 12,000 people residing on the slopes of the mountain have been shifted to temporary shelters. At the same time, the officials have also stated that the situation is being closely monitored and higher authorities are coordinating with the district to avoid any untoward incident. Indonesia has more active volcanoes than any country all across the globe as it lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” which is known for its high volcanic and seismic activities.
