PATNA - A mentally challenged woman, suspected of being a child lifter, was beaten to death with bamboo sticks, bricks and stones by a mob in Bihar’s Munger district Wednesday morning, police said. Twenty people have been arrested.

“A mob beat to death a mentally retarded woman after news spread that she was trying to lift a child,” a police official said.

Police have arrested 20 people in Munger district, about 150 km from here, after a murder case was lodged.

Last month, half a dozen people, including women, were lynched by mobs in separate incidents in neighbouring Bhagalpur district on suspicion of being child lifters.

Over three dozen lynching incidents were reported last year and over two dozen cases have been reported in the last four months.
