SHILLONG - A day before Hockey India elections, two Assam sports officials were booked Wednesday by Meghalaya police for impersonating as members of Hockey Meghalaya to vote in the Aug 5 poll.

Raj Kakoti, treasurer of Assam Olympic Association, and Sumita Sinha have been booked for cheating and impersonation, police said.

“We have registered a case against the duo,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told IANS.

Syiem said the investigation is on and Kakoti and Sinha will be questioned.

Meghalaya directorate of sports and youth affairs Tuesday lodged a complaint against the Assam sports officials.

Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M. Lanong, who looks after sports and youth affairs, told IANS: “We have asked the police to conduct a thorough probe into the matter.”

“The act by the two persons (Kakoti and Sinha) to represent the state without any authorisation by anybody from the hockey association here is tantamount to an act of fraud with malafide intentions to mislead the returning officer of the (Aug 5) elections,” a directorate of sports and youth affairs statement said.

The statement said that Kakoti and Sinha do not belong to any association or federation under the Meghalaya Olympic Association or sports department in Meghalaya and, therefore, the FIR was lodged for their fraudulently representing the state.
