Customs seize marijuana in Meghalaya

SHILLONG - A total of 119 packets of marijuana worth Rs.95 lakh and 27,100 bottles of a cough syrup abused as an intoxicant have been seized from two different locations in Meghalaya, customs official said Monday.

Customs Commissioner, Northeastern Circle, S.R. Baruah said that customs officials had started investigation to locate the owner of the seized goods as well as other suspects.

He said the 119 packets of marijuana were seized from a truck, bearing West Bengal registration number, at Umling village in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district July 31.

Baruah said the truck was coming from Manipur via Silchar in Assam and was on its way to Guwahati.

In another seizure, the customs seized 27,100 bottles of Phensedyl syrup allegedly meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh via Tripura.

The syrup bottles were concealed under gunny bags of rice in a truck bearing Assam registration number.
