Gov: ‘Significant progress’ in Mich. oil cleanup
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm says there has been “significant progress” in cleaning up an oil spill in the Kalamazoo River.
Granholm says that a Friday helicopter tour over the spill site showed there has been a lot of improvement in the containment and cleanup of the Enbridge Inc. pipeline spill over the past two days.
Granholm says she did not see any sheen of oil on Morrow Lake, a key point in Kalamazoo County where officials aim to stop the spread of the oil.
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson says she is “very confident” the spill won’t reach Lake Michigan.
The government estimates the Monday spill dumped more than 1 million gallons of oil into the river and a creek that flows into it.
