MUMBAI - Gangster Mustafa Dossa, accused of assaulting extradited don Abu Salem in the Arthur Road Central Jail last Sunday, was remanded to police custody till Aug 7 by a court here Wednesday. He told police that Salem’s injuries were self-inflicted.
The Mumbai Police Crime Branch took over the case from the local police station two days ago.
The crime branch took custody of Dossa and his associate Abdul Qayyum Sheikh, following a special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (prevention) court permission, and presented them before a magistrate.
During his preliminary questioning by crime branch sleuths, Dossa denied attacking Salem and alleged that Salem’s injuries were self-inflicted.
Dossa has made a counter-accusation against Salem of attempting to extort Rs.300 million in a property-related matter.
On Sunday), following a minor scuffle inside the high-security prison in south Mumbai, Dossa allegedly attacked and injured Salem on the face and neck with a spoon sharpened like a knife.
Even as the security apparatus went in a tizzy, Salem was shifted to Taloja Jail in adjacent Raigad district while Dossa was shunted to Thane Central Jail that evening.
Salem, extradited from Portugal in 2005, has been lodged in jail and is undergoing trial in nine cases, including two murder cases.
Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, convicted in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case and awarded death penalty, is also lodged in isolation in the same jail, where Bollywood’s rape accused actor Shiney Ahuja had also spent some time last year.
