Punjab court grants bail to Russian woman

ROPAR - A local court here Tuesday granted bail to Russian woman, Olga Timoshik, who was arrested last month for assisting a German spy.

After hearing the arguments, Additional Sessions Judge Surinder Mohan granted bail to Timoshik, 31, who was arrested by a special team of Punjab police June 23 from Jaipur town in Rajasthan.

Counsel for Timoshik said that police had implicated her in the case.

“So far, police have failed to collect even a single evidence or documentary proof against Timoshik. They are themselves not clear and falsely implicating my client in this case,” Varinder Singh, Timoshik’s lawyer, told IANS Tuesday.

According to police, Timoshik was held in Jaipur and taken to Punjab after German national Thomas Kuhn, a suspected spy who has been arrested, alleged that his missing passport was with Timoshik.

Kuhn was arrested in May from Nangal town in this Punjab district, where he was living for the past many months without any visa documents and passport.

Police said Kuhn disguised himself as a sadhu (sage) and had been living for many months on the banks of a river in Nangal town from where he was arrested in May.

He hails from Hamburg in Germany. He did not have any visa documents or passport with him and said these were with his friend, Timoshik, who was in Nepal.

Timoshik had been allowed consular access earlier this month.
