LUCKNOW - A speeding truck mowed down a girl in the Jasra area of Uttar Pradesh Monday, sparking violence as an angry mob demanded that police hand over to them the erring driver.
The mob torched the truck, smashed the windowpanes of state-run buses and targeted other public property in Jasra, some 200 km from Lucknow, in Banda district.
Anita Kumari, a Class 12 student of the Madhusoodan Inter College, was Monday crushed to death in Jasra while she was standing by the roadside, adjusting the handle of her bicycle. Locals alleged the driver was in an inebriated state at the time of the accident.
“The situation is still tense in the area, but under control. In view of the violent protests by locals, additional security has been deployed in the area and adjoining places,” Police Inspector Phool Singh told reporters in Banda.
“Agitated over the death of the student, people also attacked our teams in order to get custody of the truck driver. We had to seek assistance of the force from nearby police stations in order to bring the situation under control,” he added.
