BEIJING - A court in southern China Friday sentenced a former provincial police chief to death for taking bribes, a media report said.

The Chongqing No.1 Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Chen Shaoji to death with a two-year reprieve after a trial, China Daily reported on its website.

Chen, 64, is accused of taking 30 million yuan ($4.35 million) in bribes between 1992 and 2009. Prosecutors said Chen, his son and his mistress took the money. The court ordered confiscation of his property.

Chen has been expelled from the Communist Party of China. He was one of the eight ministerial-level officials probed for corruption last year.
