AGARTALA - Seven people were arrested Wednesday for caning two naked woman and shaving their heads after a kangaroo court held them guilty of sexual misconduct in Tripura, police here said.

The two young women were beaten severely and their heads shaved by the local people last week at Champaknagar, about 30 km north of Agartala.

The tormenters had threatened the women and their families that they would be killed if they inform the police about the incident. “However, one of the sufferers complained Tuesday night. We have arrested seven people, including six women, Wednesday,” a police officer said.

Some of the local people, who have been arrested, are suspected to be members of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

“If the persecutors are the members of CPI-M they would be punished by the party also,” a CPI-M spokesman said demanding stern action against those involved in the crime.

A delegation of the Tripura Human Rights Organisation led by its secretary Purosottam Roy Barman met the victims and demanded severe punishment for the guilty.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident police Tuesday arrested four people at Amarpur in southern Tripura for lynching an aged tribal man for practising sorcery.

According to police, the detainees accused Surendra Kishore Jamatia, 65, for the death of a local tribal woman at remote Duluma village.

They picked Jamatia up from a government hospital and hacked him to death late Monday, police said.
