Transformer explodes in Las Vegas arts district

LAS VEGAS — An electrical explosion in the arts district of Las Vegas injured two bystanders and damaged nearby buildings.

Fire officials say a transformer at a NV Energy substation exploded early Sunday.

Two people on the street were taken to University Medical Center with shrapnel wounds and smoke inhalation.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski says their injuries weren’t life-threatening.

The substation is disguised as a building — and the explosion sent bricks flying.

Firefighters had to battle a fire at the site.

NV Energy says it’s working with authorities to determine the cause of the explosion.
