Ohio roof collapse victims were doing routine work

FREMONT, Ohio — A spokesman for an Ohio sauerkraut factory says contractors were doing routine maintenance on pillars supporting a concrete roof when it collapsed, killing one worker and injuring three others.

Fremont Co. spokesman Chris Smith says there were no known problems with the roof and that it wasn’t the type of major project that requires permits.

State building safety investigators and federal officials were in Fremont, 40 miles southeast of Toledo, on Thursday to investigate what went wrong a day earlier.

The roof caved as three men from a welding company worked on the pillars inside a small building at Fremont Co., which makes sauerkraut and bottles ketchup and barbecue sauce.

Smith says the workers have said it was something they’ve done before.
