BOGOTA - A replica of the FIFA World Cup trophy, made of 11 kg cocaine, was seized at the international airport here in the Colombian capital, Colombia Airports anti-drug officials said.
Airport authorities found the 36-cm-tall statue during a routine security check at a mail warehouse at the airport, Xinhua quoted airports anti-drug chief Jose Piedrahita as saying.
The statue was painted gold with green stripes on the base. The paint was in such a “bad condition” that it aroused suspicion, CNN reported citing Colombian National Police.
It was packed in a box that also contained many team jerseys. The consignment was headed for Madrid, Spain.
Laboratory tests on the trophy said the cocaine was mixed with acetone or gasoline to make it mouldable, Piedrahita said.
