MANILA - Fifteen people were killed and dozens injured when an overloaded bus crashed into a wall in the central Philippines, police said Sunday.

Police said the brakes of the bus failed, forcing the driver to slam the vehicle into the wall along a highway in Toledo City in Cebu province, 585 km south of Manila.

Investigators said the bus, which was allowed to carry only 53 passengers, was carrying more than 60 people at the time of the accident.

Ten victims died on the spot and five others died while being treated in hospital. Forty-eight others suffered various injuries.

It was the fourth fatal accident in three weeks in Cebu.
