CHANDIGARH - Three murder accused opened fire at Haryana policemen in broad daylight Friday in the busy market area of Sector 20 here, the police said.

In a bid to escape being arrested, the accused fired six shots at the cops. However, the police managed to arrest one of them, while the other two fled from the spot.

“The three were accused of killing a man. Haryana police were tracking them for the last many days. The arrested accused has been identified as Gobind,” a police official said.

The three men were accused of killing a gangster in Ambala, around 35 km from Chandigarh, in March this year.

In the wake of this incident, police have tightened security in the city as Chandigarh administration would officially receive the Queen’s Baton Relay of the Commonwealth Games 2010 Saturday. Nearly 1,100 policemen have been deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of this event.
