Blast at Serb protest rocks northern Kosovo town
PRISTINA, Kosovo — Police say an explosion in the middle of a Serb protest in an ethnically divided town of Kosovo has left about a dozen people injured.
Kosovo police say they believe a hand grenade was thrown amid the Serbs protesting the opening of an office run by Kosovo’s majority ethnic Albanian authorities in the Serb dominated part of Mitrovica.
Police spokesman Besim Hoti says shots also were heard at the gathering of some 1,000 people in front of the civil registry office.
Hoti says about 11 people were reportedly injured in Friday’s blast, while the chief of the town’s hospital, Milan Jakovljevic, says a dozen people have sought medical treatment, including one undergoing surgery for life-threatening injuries.
Minority Serbs reject Kosovo’s independence.
