Couple who tried to kill son get life term

BHUBANESWAR - A young man and his wife in Orissa who tried to kill their eight-month-old son to enjoy a pleasure trip were Wednesday given life imprisonment, a government lawyer said.
Additional district session judge P.K. Karna of the fast track court at Malkangiri town, some 620 km form here, handed down the punishment to Samjit Mandal, 26, and his wife Amela Baroi, 22, B.C. Mishra told IANS.
The couple fed their baby poison May 7 last year and left him in a forest before leaving for Visakhapatnam for a pleasure trip they wanted to enjoy without the baby, Mishra said.
The boy survived after some people rescued him in an unconscious condition and admitted him in a hospital.
The court has also asked the couple to pay Rs.15,000 each as fine.
