Amusement park accident kills 6 in southern China
HONG KONG — An accident on a space-themed ride at a southern Chinese amusement park has killed six people and injured 10.
A statement Wednesday from the city government in Shenzhen said the accident occurred on the Space Journey ride at OCT East theme park Tuesday afternoon. It said the cause was being investigated.
Hong Kong’s Ming Pao Daily News reported Wednesday that the ride elevates and spins 11 cabins, each carrying four passengers.
The newspaper quoted witnesses as saying one cabin came loose during a high-speed spin and struck other cabins. Some fell 15 meters (50 feet), sending passengers tumbling.
The booming southern city of Shenzhen is a one-hour drive north of Hong Kong.
