NAVI MUMBAI - A teacher was arrested here Friday for allegedly raping a Class 3 student in a school toilet, police said Monday.

“We have arrested 32-year-old Firoze Ibrahim on suspicion of rape. We are yet to ascertain whether he committed the crime or not. He is in police custody till June 29 and our investigations are on,” said Inspector Sanjay Shukla.

The seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped Monday at St. Joseph School and Junior College in Kalamboli suburb of Navi Mumbai. The victim was allegedly raped in a bathroom on the fourth floor of the school by the accused.

The police complaint was lodged Wednesday. Parents demonstrated before the school the whole day Thursday demanding action against the guilty teacher.

According to school sources, Ibrahim has been teaching biology to junior college students for the past six years and has a clean image. He was described by sources as a serious teacher.

“He hardly came to the primary section,” said a school official requesting anonymity.

Police officer Shukla said: “The teacher is claiming to be not guilty. He says the area where the alleged crime took place is crowded and it is impossible not to attract attention there.”
