LUCKNOW - Seven prisoners were found in a jail hospital rather than their cells in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district. An enquiry has been ordered into the incident, an official said Friday.

“It’s quite a serious issue. The seven inmates, who had been discharged from the hospital several months ago, were found relaxing in the jail hospital. The case needs to be probed extensively,” District Magistrate Sanyukta Samaddar told reporters in Mirzapur, some 350 km from Lucknow.

Of the seven prisoners, two are facing charges of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), an official said.

“After coming across the anomaly in the Mirzapur jail Wednesday, I enquired about the case,” the district magistrate said.

On the basis of a preliminary probe, Samaddar has recommended suspension of the deputy jailor and the jail doctor.
