Toll in boat capsize rises to eight

LUCKNOW - The death toll in the boat tragedy in the Saryu river in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district has risen to eight, an official said Wednesday.
“Till late evening, we managed to take out more seven bodies from the river. A body was recovered yesterday (Tuesday) following the capsize,” District Magistrate Rigzian Sampheal told IANS on telephone Wednesday night from Bahraich town, some 300 km from Lucknow.
“We believe there could be around five people who are still missing,” he added, adding that the search operation is still on.
The boat carrying around 30-35 people capsized Tuesday near the Ekghara bank of the Saryu river.
According to police Inspector Sudhakar Upadhyay, the victims whose bodies have so far been recovered include two women, a child and five men.
The Uttar Pradesh government has announced compensation of Rs.1 lakh for each of the families of the deceased.
