LUCKNOW - One person drowned and 15 were missing Tuesday after a boat capsized in the Saryu river in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, an official said.
The boat, carrying some 30-35 people, capsized near Ekghara bank of the Saryu river.
“One body has been found,” District Magistrate Rigzian Sampheal told IANS on telephone from Bahraich, about 300 km from Lucknow.
The deceased has been identified as Teerath Prasad, 40, a resident of Pipri village in Bahraich, police said.
“At the time of accident, there were 30-35 people from around six villages, including Nehra, Shivpur, Ekghara and Pipri of Bahraich,” Inspector Sudhakar Upadhyay told IANS.
According to officials, heavy rainfall in Bahraich was hampering the rescue operations being carried out by the district authorities, police and civic agencies.
“We have sought help from the Provincial Armed Constabulary. Divers from nearby districts have also been pressed into service. Till now, we have managed to take out only one body from the river,” said Sampheal.
