CHANDIGARH - Seven prisoners, lodged here in the high-security Burail jail, sustained injuries after two rival groups allegedly clashed Monday, police said.

According to police, Sonu, Parmatma, Arjun and Kuldeep, who are all murder accused, clashed with three highway robbers — Jaipal, Harinder and Gursahib.

“There was old animosity between Sonu and Harinder. Today when police were taking the four murder accused to the court they somehow came in direct eye-contact with the highway robbers. After a heated argument they attacked each other with stones and bricks,” said a jail official.

“In the melee, all of them sustained injuries and were taken to a government hospital for first aid,” he added.

A thorough inquiry will be conducted into the matter, police said.

“We are looking into the matter. Strict action will be taken against the accused prisoners who indulged in the brawl,” Additional Inspector General of Police (Prisons) N.P.S. Randhawa, told IANS.
