India panel gives recommendations on Bhopal leak

NEW DELHI, India — Cabinet ministers are recommending that India’s government revisit its response to the 1984 toxic gas leak in Bhopal.

The leak at the Union Carbide plant killed an estimated 15,000 people in the world’s worst industrial disaster. Anger over the case revived this month after a court sentenced officials at a former Union Carbide subsidiary to two years in prison.

Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said Monday a report from a panel of experts deals with compensation for the victims, health issues and the possibility of extraditing ex-Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson from the United States. He said the Cabinet will discuss it Friday.
