Wildfire forces evacuations in Flagstaff, Ariz.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A wildfire burning near downtown Flagstaff has prompted evacuations of nearby businesses, a hotel and homes feared to be in the fire’s path and has sent smoke through parts of the city, causing traffic to back up on Interstate 40, authorities said Saturday.

The fire broke out at about 1:30 p.m. behind the Little America Hotel near the interstate, Flagstaff city spokeswoman Kimberly Ott said. It quickly worked its way up the hill and has threatened homes in two neighborhoods while burning about 400 acres.

About 19 families have checked into a temporary shelter at a middle school, and American Red Cross spokeswoman Kelli Young said more are expected.

Animals at the nearby Humane Society were moved to another shelter north of town.

Billowing smoke in east Flagstaff prompted officials to close three interstate off ramps near the hotel. The interstate remained open but traffic was moving slowly as drivers faced reduced visibility.

Fire crews from Flagstaff, the nearby Highlands Fire District and the U.S. Forest Service were battling the flames, and more resources were on the way.

The sounds of helicopters and air tankers buzzed overhead and dropped fire retardant and water on the blaze, aiding ground crews.

Authorities said they have been questioning one person about the wildfire.
