SANGRUR - A farmer was shot dead in a Punjab village over a dispute on irrigation of fields, police said Saturday.

According to police, the deceased, Gurcharan Singh, was a resident of Harion village in Sangrur district, some 70 km from the state capital Chandigarh.

“Gurcharan was watering the crops in his fields when he was attacked by his neighbour Janjeer Singh and his three sons. When he retaliated, Janjeer brought out a gun and started firing. Gurcharan was hit and died in a hospital,” a police official said.

“There was an old animosity between the two families over the issue of irrigation and drains that pass through their fields,” the official said.
