Wildfire forces evacuations in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Authorities in Arizona say a wildfire that broke out near downtown Flagstaff has prompted evacuations of nearby businesses, a hotel and homes feared to be in the fire’s path.

Flagstaff Fire Department spokeswoman Kimberly Ott says the blaze broke out at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday behind the Little America Hotel near Interstate 40. The fire quickly worked its way up a hill and is threatening homes in two neighborhoods.

A heavy helicopter and two air tankers are helping ground crews battle the flames. Ott says the fire has burned about a square mile that is filled mostly with ponderosa pine trees.
