SHIMLA - Six pilgrims were killed and eight seriously injured when an overcrowded vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, police said Wednesday.

“Fourteen people were travelling in a Tata Sumo when it fell into a gorge Tuesday night. The victims were returning from a religious fair at Kamrunag,” Superintendent of Police S.M. Agnihotri told IANS on telephone from Mandi town.

He said the victims belonged to three families of a village near Pandoh town in Mandi district. The dead included three women.

The accident occurred about 25 km from Mandi on the Pandoh-Gohar road. Four people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries at the Mandi district hospital.

The injured have been admitted to the district hospital at Mandi.

“The cause of the accident was rash and negligent driving,” another police official said.
