Strong earthquake rocks eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Officials say an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 has hit eastern Indonesia.

Residents say the quake struck off Papua province early Wednesday causing panic, but no initial reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological survey says it was centered 88 miles (33 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.
