SHILLONG - Indian border guards detained two people near the Bangladesh border in Meghalaya and recovered brown sugar worth nearly Rs.50 lakh from them, a Border Security Force (BSF) official said Sunday.

“The smugglers were detained Saturday after a tip-off,” BSF spokesman Ravi Gandhi told IANS.

He said the duo — Leondra Sangma and Tainat Sangma - were detained at Baghmara in South Garo Hills district.

Baghmara is in the western part of the state about 450 Km from capital Shillong.

Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh, part of which is porous, hilly and unfenced and prone to frequent infiltration.
