SRINAGAR - Strict restrictions were imposed in the old city areas of Srinagar for the second consecutive day Sunday, a day after clashes broke out over a teenager’s death during street protests.
Restrictions were imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta, S.R. Gunj and Safa Kadal police stations to prevent violence.
As many as 45 people, including 15 policemen, were injured in daylong clashes Saturday as angry mobs pelted stones at police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers.
Tufail Ahmad Mattoo, a Class 12 student, died in Rajouri Kadal area during clashes between the police and the stone pelters Friday.
Residents alleged that the student was killed by the security forces. But the police maintain that the student was mysteriously murdered and that they were investigating the incident.
But sources close to the team of doctors who conducted the post mortem examination of Mattoo told a local English daily that the teenager had been killed by a tear smoke shell that hit his head.
Hundreds of mourners attended the teenager’s funeral at the Martyrs’ graveyard in Eidgah area here Saturday afternoon.
