Mandela Foundation names driver in fatal crash
JOHANNESBURG — Nelson Mandela’s office says a close family friend was driving the car in which Mandela’s great-granddaughter was riding when she was killed in a crash.
A statement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation on Sunday for the first time named the driver. The statement says he is 23-year-old Sizwe Mankazana. He is the son of Zwelakhe Mankazana, the partner of Zenani Mandela-Dlamini, who is the great-aunt of the 13-year-old who was killed and who shares her name.
The foundation says, “Sizwe is regarded as part of the Mandela family.”
Plans have not yet been completed for 13-year-old Zenani’s funeral.
Police say Mankazana could be charged with drunk driving and homicide after the accident early Friday, as Zenani was returning home from a World Cup concert.
