NEW DELHI - The government Friday declared the Indian Mujahideen (IM) a terrorist outfit and banned it under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
A home ministry notification said the IM hasd been added to the list of banned organisations under act.
“Government of India has issued an order adding Indian Mujahideen, along with all its formations and front organizations, to this list,” the notification said.
The IM, the 35th organisation in the country to be declared a terror outfit, first came to the limelight when it claimed responsibility for multiple blasts in Uttar Pradesh in 2006.
The outfit primarily comprises cadres from banned outfits like the Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami and the Students Islamic Movement of India.
Two IM cadres were gunned down in a controversial shootout in Batla House in south Delhi’s Jamia Nagar in September 2008, an incident in which Delhi Police Inspector Mool Chand Sharma also lost his life.
