KATHMANDU - Two Indian policemen have been caught with hashish in a border district in Nepal, the official media said.

Indra Bhanu Rai and Umesh Yadav, two policemen employed in the Badauni police station in India’s Uttar Pradesh state, were arrested in Nepal’s border district Kapilavastu after they were found to be carrying 700 gm of hashish, the Gorkhapatra daily reported Wednesday.

Hashish is the purified resinous extract of the hemp plant and used as a hallucinogen.

During a police check at the border bus station Monday, the two men tried to flee but were caught.

Soon after their arrest, there was pressure by the Indian police from across the border for their release, the daily said.

The two men were presented in the district court and formally charged with drug trafficking.

The reported arrest of the two Indian policemen comes close on the heels of an Indian minister being detained in Nepal.

Last week, Vidya Chaudhary, women’s welfare minister in Uttar Pradesh, was detained by Nepal police for several hours after she crossed over into Nepal with armed bodyguards without informing the Nepal authorities.

The minister said they had strayed into Nepal by mistake on the way to addressing an election rally and were handed over to the Indian police after questioning.
