Sivanandan is new Maharashtra police chief

MUMBAI - Mumbai Police Commissioner D. Sivanandan was Monday promoted as Director General of Police, Maharashtra, as the present police chief A.N. Roy retired.
Sivanandan superseded Hasan Gafoor (DG Anti-Corruption) and P.P. Srivastava (DG Home Guard) for the post.
Sanjeev Dayal, the additional DG (Special Operation), is to take over as Mumbai police chief.
Sivanandan shot to fame during his momentous tenure as head of the Mumbai Crime Branch, when the police began gunning for the underworld in the late 1990s.
Sivanandan, who has also worked as police commissioner of Thane city, was in the race for the DGP’s post, with Hasan Gafoor being the front runner.
Gafoor, the senior-most IPS officer, after Roy followed by P.P. Srivastava, the managing director of Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation Ltd (popularly known as DGP, Housing), were at the top of the seniority list.
The four DGP posts in the state are DGP (Maharashtra), DGP (Anti Corruption Bureau), DGP (Housing) and DGP (Special Operations).
Those in the race for the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner included Additional DGP (Special Operations) Sanjeev Dayal, Additional DGP of State (CID) S.P.S. Yadav, Pune Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh and Additional DGP (Traffic) Arup Patnaik.
