LUCKNOW - A criminal case was wednesday filed against the vice-chancellor and three other staff of the Bhatkhande Music University here for the death a female student, who had allegedly committed suicide in January, police said.

The case was registered on the complaint of the girl’s father, Ramesh Chandra Shukla, who has levelled charges of abetment to suicide against the vice-chancellor and others.

“Those who have been booked include the vice-chancellor, a teacher, a warden and a guard of the university,” Deputy Superintendent of Police B.R. Saroj told reporters.

In January, Hitanshu Shukla, a first-year student of the Masters in Performing Arts of the Bhatkhande University, was found hanging in her hostel room.

Her father had accused Vice-Chancellor Shruti Kanotkar, warden Alka Mishra and others of forcing his daughter to take the extreme step.

“Inquiry is under way. Further action would be taken against the varsity officials on the basis of the investigations,” said Saroj.
