Nine killed as truck overturns in Maharashtra

MUMBAI - Nine people, including three children, were killed and eight injured when a truck overturned in Nandurbar district in northwest Maharashtra early Sunday, police said.
“Seventeen people were travelling in a truck that was going to Surat city in Gujarat from Sakri village. They had come to attend a wedding here. The truck they were travelling in skidded off the road and the driver lost control,” said Assistant Police Inspector A.R. Deore of Visarwadi police station, under whose jurisdiction Sakri village falls.
The accident took place a little after midnight.
“Our officers along with some villagers went for rescue operations and we managed to save some of them. The truck was laden with onion sacks. Most of the people were buried under those sacks,” said Deore.
The injured have been admitted to hospital, Deore said.
Those killed in the accident have been identified as Shivaji Salunkhe (45), Rinku Vijaymali (12), Manoj Jadhav (11), Gangabai Jadav (65), Meerabai Wagh (55), Leelabai Wagh (55), Pushpabai Jadhav (45), Gulu Mali (2) and Kinnar (30).
