Mob goes on rampage after road accident

LUCKNOW - A mob went on the rampage in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat (rural) district after three members of a marriage party were killed and 30 injured in a road accident Friday, police said.
At least seven policemen were injured when residents of the district’s Birhauna town, where the accident took place, set vehicles afire, damaged public property and attacked policemen, officials said.
Later, police baton-charged the protesters to disperse them.
“The situation is still tense, but under control. Taking into account the violence, security in the town has been strengthened. Besides the regular police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) has also been deployed,” Superintendent of Police Govind Agarwal told reporters in Kanpur dehat, some 150 km from Lucknow.
He said some people, including seven policemen, were injured in the violence, but none of them seriously.
The accident occurred when a truck rammed into the bus in which the marriage party was travelling. According to police, of the 30 injured in the accident, the condition of five was critical.
